The Sociology of Georg Simmel Georg Simmel (1858-1918) was born in Berlin, Germany, the son of a successful businessman and the youngest of seven children. He formally studied philosophy and history at the University of Berlin, but Simmel was interested in a wide variety of topics including psychology, anthropology, economics, and sociology. Simmel, the only classical sociologist to have left an explicitly gastronomic discussion, published his essay on "The sociology of the meal" (here translated into English for the first time) in a introductory chapter of his 'large' sociology from 1908. There, Simmel underscored the a priori character of the 'pure' forms of sociation over against the 'empirical' aspects of the 'contents' enter- ing into these forms of sociation, i.e. the motives, needs, ends and inner 'experiences' of the specific individuals (cf.
